Vacuum Sealer
Vacuum sealer is a device or machine that used to for vacuum packaging. The main function of vacuum sealer is to pump out the air in the vacuum packet before it can be seal using the heat. In general, the vacuum sealer will operate in two mode, vacuuming mode and seal mode. Some of the vacuum sealer machines have capabilities to vacuum the vacuum container using the special equipment that design for this purpose. Therefore, it is important for you to read the specification of the vacuum sealer before you buy it.
The vacuum sealer has two categories, one for the industrial and another one is for home user. The industrial vacuum sealer usually is more complicated and expensive suitable with its specification and the capabilities to performing it operation in large number of packaging. As we understand, the industrial users have a tendency to produce more products in shorten time with high quality packaging. The other type of the vacuum sealer that we know for home user is more compact and slow compares its industrial cousin. However, the price will more suitable for home user and also it is easier to use since the engineer behind this type of machine usually design with mind that you will use it when you need (not 24/7) and home user really like the one push button concept. About the quality of packaging, you should not worry because the home vacuum sealer still produces the high quality packaging as long as you are using the recommended vacuum bag/package by manufacturer. But keep in mind, some of the vacuum sealer can work with any type of plastic bag except the plastic bags that have a hole.
Why did you need the vacuum sealer at home?
I think it is more accurate if I can say you need more in the kitchen. However, you still can use the vacuum sealer for non-food mainly if you need to store it in long time and in the same time you want to save the space (the plastic bag will be flatten). For the kitchen uses, you should already know that the vacuum sealer is used to store the food in vacuum condition. The foods that are store in the vacuum condition is more last longer and the vacuum condition will maintain the freshness of the food. Besides that if you want to store the food in the fridge, the vacuum condition will help the food to last longer than normal frozen condition. Bare in your mind, the fresh product like meat, fish, vegetables and others usually will be advice to keep it in frozen condition even after you put it under vacuum condition.
You must wondering, how the vacuum condition help the food to last longer? This is so simple. The bacteria that life in the food need air to life, when you pump out the air from the bag and produce the vacuum condition; the bacteria become inactive and growing more slowly. That why the food can last longer and also it is the reason we need to store the dairies and organic product in the fridge or frozen condition because it is not completely stop the bacteria from cause the decomposition of food (spoilage the foods). For dry product you can store it in the room temperature as long as you can keep the moisture low and of course the vacuum sealer will help the dry product to last longer too.
How long will the vacuum sealed food last?
As we understood before, the vacuum sealer drastically extend the freshness of your food. Below are approximate shelf lives for vacuum sealed products:
Fresh Food: To get the maximum protection from spoilage, store fresh product or food in the frozen condition. This product may also be stored in the refrigerator (non frozen compartment), but this storage method will considerably reduce the shelf life. Vegetables and fruit, if blanched, will last in the freezer (frozen condition) for 2 1/2 years. If refrigerated, the shelf life is reduced to 3 weeks.
Fresh Meat: Fresh meat should be stored in the freezer (under frozen condition) and it usually can maintain its freshness for 2-3 years (in average). However, under refrigeration alone, the fresh meat not will last more than 3 weeks.
Ground Meat: For the ground meat, the maximize product life if it was vacuum sealed properly should be around 1 year. In the refrigerated, the ground meat will only last for 1 month.
Fish: Like the meat, you should store fish in the freezer after vacuum sealing it, in the frozen condition fish can maintain it freshness up to 1, ½ year. In the refrigerated, fish only can last for 1 week.
Cheese: The vacuum sealing Cheese also should be stored in the refrigerator to prevent spoilage in its surface. The properly sealing cheese will have a shelf life of approximately 5-6 months. Keep in mind, if you want use the vacuum bag for a multiple times, use the big one.
Breads: Breads, which includes items such as cookies or crackers, can be stored at room temperature at dry condition. They can last for 6 week or the high quality cracker usually can last longer.
Grains: Grains, including nuts and pasta, after the vacuum sealing can be stored in the room temperature. As usual this type of food can last for years.
Finally, make sure you follow the manufacturer expired date to prevent any health problem. Event after vacuum sealing and store in suitable condition, the expired date still have a major role when it related to foods.
